ProWellness
ProWellness is a pioneering program dedicated to the health, well-being and sustainable development of legal professionals and other professions of public trust.
In the legal profession, an informed state of mind and a humane attitude are crucial to a fair resolution of a case. Chronic exposure to stress leads to deterioration of health, quality of life, and relationships, impacting the entire justice system.
We combine mindfulness practices with preventative health care and psychological support, creating a comprehensive system for lawyers' professional and personal well-being. We utilize breathing practices to improve presentations, public speaking, and concentration. Our goal is to establish mindful judging and mindful advocacy as standards in legal education and practice.
We implement mindfulness programs, preventive health care, and comprehensive support as part of the Lawyers For Lawyers® initiative, building a new quality in the administration of justice – more humane, conscious, and effective.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness in law
1. Mindfulness at work and in everyday life (mindfulness-based stress reduction) dedicated to professions of public trust
2. Building the professional activity of lawyers in the formula of sustainable development (sustainable development / collaborative lawyering)
In a topic as important as law, human attitude and the appropriate state of consciousness are essential for the successful and therefore truly just development of the matter.
An inappropriate approach by a judge, lawyer, or prosecutor can have not only negative short-term consequences but can also lead to real tragedy. And it often does. Developing awareness and the ability to recognize and work with what's happening to the mind is therefore not only necessary, but also imperative for those who will assume or have already assumed positions in the legal sphere.
Mindfulness in law and the legal profession is a completely new topic in Poland. We sometimes discuss mindfulness in law, but more often in the context of animal rights than human rights. Much remains to be done.
However, mindfulness in law is not just about carefully observing the moment with a non-judgmental mind open to the here and now. Mindfulness can become a method for improving the well-being of lawyers and legal professionals, developing self-awareness of people and the environment, coping with difficult emotions, and developing and stabilizing attention and concentration (as well as relaxation skills), also through work focused on the body and breathing.
Additionally, mindfulness, through the development of awareness, makes one sensitive to other people, their emotional state, needs and, finally, their rights – including the fundamental right to dignity.
Mindfulness in law also involves compassion for oneself and others, and the courage to be sensitive and professional at the same time. conscious, present, and balanced.
Mindfulness can be a simple way for lawyers to cope with stress. And there's no shortage of stress in this profession. The legal profession is demanding and requires constant effort, not only intellectual but also constant work in relationships with other people, teams, structures/systems, most often in conflict or dispute.
Often, a lawyer's real influence on the unfolding reality is unnoticeable, but their mindful presence can be a source of peace and well-being for the client. Mindfulness and meditation practices have demonstrated significant beneficial effects on improving concentration, listening skills, empathy, and well-being. A growing number of lawyers in the West, including judges, attorneys, and mediators, find the meditation process helpful in their work and beneficial for their lives overall.
During my many years of legal practice, I have observed thousands of cases and conflicts. I saw the need to introduce alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods to Poland – primarily mediation.
This is one of those activities that yields tangible results. It reduces the stress often experienced by both the accused and the complainant.
These are very difficult situations. But there are alternatives.
The life situations in which lawyers work often go beyond the commonly accepted
and acceptable patterns of stress resilience. Stress is a biologically based mechanism that ensures human survival. However, chronic exposure to stress leads to deterioration of health, quality of life, and relationships. This includes impacting the justice system through the work of judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys.
Mindful jugding and mindful advocacy should become a permanent part of the teaching programmes (introducing mindfulness into the training programmes) and the management of lawyers' work.
